The History of Wild West Balloon Adventures
Wild West Balloon Adventures was founded in 1998 by Ian Cox, a longtime Steamboat local. Originally from England, Ian moved to Steamboat in 1979 and began flying balloons in the Yampa Valley in 1982. With a love for the outdoors and a strong entrepreneurial spirit, Ian found ballooning to be the perfect fit.
Ian and his wife Shelley successfully operated both Wild West Balloon Adventures and Pegasus Balloon Tours for two decades after acquiring Pegasus. In 2011, Bud Whitehead joined the crew and began flying balloons alongside Ian. On January 1, 2018, Bud and his wife Stacia purchased the business, continuing the tradition. Today, both the “Wild West” and “Pegasus” balloons can still be seen soaring above the valley.
What to Expect
Your hot air balloon adventure is designed to be memorable from start to finish. Flights take place early in the morning and include:

- Flights are available daily, weather permitting
- One flight per day in winter; two flights per day in summer
- Flights typically begin between 7:00 AM and 8:00 AM
- The full experience lasts approximately 2 to 2.5 hours, including 45 minutes of flight time
- Each flight can accommodate up to 8 guests
- Larger parties will require separate flights
- Children must be at least 6 years old to participate
- Wear warm, comfortable boots or shoes and layered clothing for comfort
- Flight decisions are determined by weather on the morning of your scheduled trip; rescheduling may be possible
- A signed waiver is required before your flight (sent via email)
