A Tradition Over a Century in the Making

The Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival has been an annual tradition since 1914, originally designed to lift spirits during the long, snow-filled winters of Routt County. Over the years, it has grown into one of the most beloved winter festivals in Colorado, blending Western heritage with high-energy ski and snowboard performances, thrilling competitions, and vibrant community celebrations. Hosted by the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club and sponsored by Yampa Valley Bank, this event is a testament to Steamboat’s reputation as Ski Town, USA.

Must-See Events at the Steamboat Winter Carnival

1. Street Events

One of the most exhilarating parts of Winter Carnival takes place on Lincoln Avenue, where local kids strap on skis or snowboards and are pulled by horses through the snow-covered streets. From the Donkey Jump, where young athletes launch off a jump while being towed, to the Shovel Race, where daring riders grip a shovel while being pulled full-speed ahead, these Western-meets-winter sports events are a spectacle you won’t want to miss.

2. The Night Extravaganza

As the sun sets, Howelsen Hill comes alive with an electrifying show of ski tricks, fireworks, and one of the most legendary traditions—the Lighted Man. Adorned with flashing lights and shooting fireworks from his suit, the Lighted Man has been a crowd favorite since 1936. Watch as daredevil skiers soar through flaming hoops and local athletes showcase their skills against the backdrop of a spectacular fireworks display lighting up the sky.

3. Ski Jumping and Nordic Events

Steamboat Springs has produced more Winter Olympians than any other town in the U.S., and you’ll see that talent on full display at Howelsen Hill. From ski jumping competitions to freestyle and alpine races, Winter Carnival celebrates the deep ski culture that defines the town.

4. The Diamond Hitch Parade

On Sunday, the Diamond Hitch Parade takes over downtown, featuring horse-drawn floats, local organizations, and ski groups weaving through the streets. This unique Western-meets-ski-town parade is a true nod to Steamboat’s heritage, where you’ll see riders skiing behind horses in perfect formation.

A Community Effort & a Legacy of Giving Back

The Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival is more than just a festival—it’s a community-driven event that supports local youth athletes. The event is organized by volunteers, and proceeds from Winter Carnival go directly toward supporting the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, helping young athletes chase their dreams in skiing and snowboarding.
