When the Yampa Valley turns gold
Fall does not last long in Steamboat Springs, which is part of what makes it so special. For a few weeks each year, the surrounding hillsides brighten with golden aspens while cottonwoods and willows bring shades of yellow, orange, and red to the riverbanks. Warm afternoons, cool evenings, and quieter trails make this one of our favorite times to explore the area.
A classic leaf-peeping drive
Buffalo Pass
Known locally as Buff Pass, this is one of the first places many Steamboat residents think of when fall colors arrive. Routt County Road 38 climbs away from town through thick aspen groves, opening to broad views across the Yampa Valley.
You can take in plenty of color from the road, but it is worth slowing down and finding a safe place to stop. Bring coffee or a picnic, leave extra time for photos, and let the drive be the activity rather than simply the way to get somewhere else.
Best for: Scenic driving, mountain biking, picnics, and expansive valley views.
Big views east of town
Rabbit Ears Pass
Head east from Steamboat on U.S. Highway 40 and the landscape quickly widens. Rabbit Ears Pass offers clusters of golden aspens, open meadows, and long views back toward the Yampa Valley.
The drive alone is rewarding, especially in the softer light of the morning or late afternoon. Travelers who want to stretch their legs can explore one of the area's trails and look for the rock formation that gave the pass its name.
Best for: Panoramic views, an easy scenic drive, and a short fall hike.

An iconic Steamboat landmark
Fish Creek Falls
Fish Creek Falls is impressive in every season, but autumn gives the familiar view a completely different frame. Color gathers around the canyon and along the path as the waterfall drops over the rocky cliff.
A short paved walk leads to the lower overlook, making this one of the most approachable stops on the list. If you have more time and are prepared for a longer hike, the Upper Falls Trail continues beyond the overlook into the surrounding forest.
Best for: Families, a shorter outing, waterfall views, and photography.
Fall scenery close to downtown
Emerald Mountain
Emerald Mountain sits directly across from downtown, making it an easy choice when you want a real hike without devoting the entire day to it. Its network of hiking and biking trails moves through stands of aspens that catch the afternoon light beautifully.
As you gain elevation, turn around for views of downtown, the ski area, and the surrounding hills. The mix of colorful trees and recognizable Steamboat scenery makes this a particularly rewarding place to bring a camera.

An easy walk through town
Yampa River Core Trail
You do not have to leave town to find fall color. The paved Yampa River Core Trail follows the river for 7.5 miles, passing parks, bridges, and sections of cottonwood and willow that shift into warm autumn shades.
Walk as much or as little as you like, stop for lunch downtown, or bring bikes and cover a longer stretch. It is an easy addition to an arrival afternoon or a slower morning before heading home.
Best for: Casual walks, bike rides, families, and a car-free fall outing.

- Watch the timing. Peak color often arrives from mid-to-late September, but temperature and weather can shift the schedule each year.
- Start early. Morning light is beautiful, trailheads are quieter, and you will have more flexibility if a parking area is full.
- Bring layers. Sunny afternoons can feel warm while mornings and evenings cool down quickly.
- Respect wildlife. Keep your distance, stay alert, and keep pets leashed when wildlife is nearby.
- Check conditions. Review weather, trail, and road information before leaving, particularly after an early-season storm.
