As winter bids it’s chilly farewell, Mammoth Lakes gears up for the warm embrace of spring, and we couldn’t be more excited! Picture this: the snow-covered landscapes transforming into an array of bright colors. Here at Nomadness Rentals, we’re all about celebrating the change of seasons, and in this article, we’re sharing five fantastic things you can dive into this spring in Mammoth Lakes.

Go Spring Skiing at Mammoth Mountain

While winter skiing is still available, in a few months you’ll want to try out spring skiing which can be equally fun! As the temperature gets warmer, you won’t have as much powder but you’ll get corn snow that Mammoth Mountain is famous for. Go for some runs on the east side of the mountain by The Mill, then make your way to the Mammoth Mountain Main Lodge to catch the gondola to the top of the mountain, then ski the runs on the backside! The sun softens the snow, so chasing it around the mountain east to west is the best way to go.

Go Spring Mountain Biking

The lower elevations provide an optimal setting for spring mountain biking, and a must-do experience in Mammoth Lakes involves exploring the scenic Lower Rock Creek Trail. Start your ride at the trailhead on Lower Rock Creek Road, conveniently located near US 395, and descend through the initial segment. Upon reaching the road, navigate across and ascend to the commencement of the second section. As the trail concludes its descent in the second section, it intersects with the road once again.

Typically, riders opt for a downhill direction, arranging for a car shuttle to return to the trail’s summit. For those seeking a more adventurous challenge, turning the route into a round trip covers a distance of 16 miles. Alternatively, for a slightly less demanding yet equally enjoyable 6-mile ride, create a loop by cycling up the paved road and looping through the top two sections.

Explore Hot Creek

Get ready for a real treat as you witness the incredible geothermal vents doing their thing at Hot Creek! Just 15 minutes south of Mammoth Lakes, this spot is perfect for a laid-back stroll, soaking in nature’s wonders, and those jaw-dropping mountain views.Whether you’re enjoying the scenery from the lookout above or taking a leisurely trail down to be by the creek, Hot Creek guarantees a magical experience.

Go Spring Fishing in Mammoth Lakes

Springtime in Mammoth Lakes offers anglers a prime opportunity to indulge in the joy of fishing amidst stunning natural surroundings. While the official Mono County fishing season commences on the last Saturday of April each year, many streams and rivers welcome year-round catch-and-release fishing with barbless hooks. This means that even before the season fully opens, anglers can cast their lines into the pristine waters of the Eastern Sierra.

Grab your trusty fly rod and head to renowned fishing spots such as Hot Creek, the Upper Owens, Lower Owens, or the East Walker River, where the tranquil waters promise exciting encounters with trout and other prized catches. Before setting out, it’s crucial to consult the California Department of Fish and Wildlife for the latest fishing regulations to ensure a responsible and enjoyable fishing experience.

Spring Hiking in Mammoth Lakes

As spring’s warmth breathes life back into Mammoth Lakes, it’s time to trade winter layers for hiking gear. Convict Lake steals the spotlight for a perfect springtime adventure, thanks to its sunny south-facing side. Start your journey by parking near the marina and opting for the right side of the Convict Lake Loop, guiding you to the charming backside of the lake.

When there is still snow on the shaded south shore, return the same way for a two-mile round trip hike. Or if the snow and ice are completely melted, continue around the lake for a full loop. Use caution as this side is icy and steep and prone to avalanches from the mountain above.
